Zak Kostopoulos
Zak Kostopoulos (Greek: Ζακ Κωστόπουλος; 22 August 1985 – 21 September 2018) was a Greek-American LGBT activist, drag performer, and human rights defender. He was known for his work in advocating for the rights of the LGBT community, people living with HIV/AIDS, and other marginalized groups in Greece.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Zak Kostopoulos was born on 22 August 1985 in the United States to Greek parents. He moved to Greece at a young age and grew up in Athens. He studied at the American College of Greece and later pursued a degree in acting.
Activism[edit | edit source]
Kostopoulos was a prominent figure in the Greek LGBT community. He was an active member of the organization Positive Voice, which supports people living with HIV/AIDS. He also worked with the Athens Pride organization and was a vocal advocate for LGBT rights, frequently participating in public events and discussions to raise awareness about issues affecting the community.
Drag Performance[edit | edit source]
Under the stage name "Zackie Oh," Kostopoulos performed as a drag queen, using his platform to challenge social norms and promote acceptance and equality. His performances were known for their boldness and creativity, and he became a well-known figure in the Greek drag scene.
Death[edit | edit source]
On 21 September 2018, Zak Kostopoulos died under controversial circumstances in central Athens. He was involved in an incident at a jewelry store, where he was reportedly attempting to escape after being accused of theft. Video footage showed Kostopoulos being violently beaten by several individuals, including the store owner and a real estate agent. He later died from his injuries.
The incident sparked widespread outrage and protests, with many calling for justice and condemning the violence against Kostopoulos. His death highlighted issues of homophobia, stigma against people living with HIV, and police brutality in Greece.
