Zanesville is a city located in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. It is the county seat and the largest city in Muskingum County. The city is named after Ebenezer Zane, who established the Zane's Trace, a pioneer road through present-day Ohio.

Zanesville was established in 1797 by Ebenezer Zane, a Revolutionary War veteran. Zane was granted land in Ohio as a reward for his military service and he established the community at the junction of the Muskingum River and the Licking River. The city grew rapidly in the 19th century due to its location on major transportation routes and its proximity to abundant natural resources.
