Zdeňka Šilhavá

Zdeňka Šilhavá (born 9 May 1957) is a retired discus thrower and shot putter from the Czech Republic. She is best known for her achievements in the discus throw, where she set multiple world records and won numerous international competitions.

Early Life and Career[edit | edit source]

Zdeňka Šilhavá was born on 9 May 1957 in Prague, Czech Republic. She began her athletic career at a young age, showing a natural talent for track and field events. She initially focused on the shot put, but later shifted her attention to the discus throw.

Achievements[edit | edit source]

Šilhavá's first major international success came in 1980, when she won the gold medal in the discus throw at the European Athletics Championships. She followed this up with a silver medal at the World Athletics Championships in 1983.

In 1984, Šilhavá set a new world record in the discus throw with a distance of 74.56 meters. This record still stands today, making it one of the longest-standing records in athletics.

Šilhavá retired from competitive athletics in 1993, but remains involved in the sport as a coach and mentor.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Zdeňka Šilhavá is widely regarded as one of the greatest discus throwers of all time. Her world record throw of 74.56 meters is considered one of the most impressive feats in the history of the sport.
