Zembrace Symtouch

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Zembrace SymTouch is a prescription medication used for the acute treatment of migraine headaches with or without aura in adults. It is a form of sumatriptan, which belongs to a class of medications known as serotonin (5-HT) receptor agonists, also commonly referred to as triptans. Triptans work by constricting blood vessels around the brain and blocking the release of certain natural substances that cause pain, nausea, and other symptoms of migraine. Zembrace SymTouch is specifically designed for individuals who require a lower dose of sumatriptan or for those who have not found relief from other migraine treatments.

Composition and Formulation[edit | edit source]

Zembrace SymTouch is administered via a subcutaneous injection, providing a rapid onset of action. Each pre-filled, single-dose syringe contains 3 mg of sumatriptan. This lower dose is beneficial for patients who may experience side effects from higher doses of sumatriptan or those who require a tailored dosage for effective relief.

Indications[edit | edit source]

Zembrace SymTouch is indicated for the acute treatment of migraine attacks, with or without aura, in adults. It is not intended for the prophylactic therapy of migraine or for the treatment of cluster headaches.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

The therapeutic efficacy of Zembrace SymTouch is primarily attributed to its active ingredient, sumatriptan. Sumatriptan is a selective agonist for vascular 5-hydroxytryptamine 1 (5-HT1) receptors, but it does not affect other serotonin receptor subtypes. Activation of these receptors leads to the constriction of cranial blood vessels, which is believed to counteract the vasodilation associated with migraine headaches. Additionally, sumatriptan inhibits the activity of the trigeminal nerve, further reducing the transmission of pain signals.

Usage[edit | edit source]

Zembrace SymTouch is intended for subcutaneous administration only. Patients are advised to use the medication at the first sign of a migraine headache. If the initial dose does not provide relief, a second dose may be administered at least one hour after the first dose, with a maximum of two doses in 24 hours. It is important to note that the safety of treating more than four headaches in a 30-day period has not been established.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of Zembrace SymTouch include injection site reactions, tingling or numbness in the fingers and toes, dizziness, warm or cold sensation, and chest or throat tightness. Although rare, more serious cardiovascular side effects can occur, especially in patients with risk factors for coronary artery disease.

Precautions[edit | edit source]

Before using Zembrace SymTouch, patients should discuss their medical history with their healthcare provider, especially any history of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, or kidney or liver disease. Zembrace SymTouch should not be used within 24 hours of another triptan or certain types of antidepressants.

Conclusion[edit | edit source]

Zembrace SymTouch offers an effective treatment option for adults suffering from acute migraine headaches. Its lower dose of sumatriptan and subcutaneous administration route make it a suitable choice for certain patients who require immediate relief from migraine symptoms.
