Zygomaticofacial
Zygomaticofacial refers to the zygomaticofacial nerve, a branch of the zygomatic nerve that is itself a branch of the maxillary nerve. The zygomaticofacial nerve is responsible for providing sensory innervation to the skin on the prominence of the cheek, also known as the zygomatic bone or cheekbone.
Anatomy[edit | edit source]
The zygomaticofacial nerve originates from the zygomatic nerve after it enters the orbit. It then passes through the zygomatic bone via the zygomaticofacial foramen, a small opening in the bone, to reach the skin of the face.
Function[edit | edit source]
The primary function of the zygomaticofacial nerve is to provide sensory innervation to the skin on the prominence of the cheek. This includes the area over the zygomatic bone and the upper lip.
Clinical significance[edit | edit source]
Damage to the zygomaticofacial nerve can result in loss of sensation in the area of the face it supplies. This can occur due to trauma, surgery, or disease processes that affect the nerve.
