Édouard Philippe

Édouard Philippe (born 28 November 1970) is a French politician who served as Prime Minister of France from 15 May 2017 to 3 July 2020 under President Emmanuel Macron. He is a member of the Horizons party, which he founded in 2021.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Philippe was born in Rouen, Seine-Maritime, and grew up in Bonnelles, Yvelines. He studied at the Sciences Po, where he graduated in 1992, and later attended the École nationale d'administration (ENA), graduating in 1997.
Early career[edit | edit source]
After graduating from ENA, Philippe worked as a lawyer at the Council of State. He later joined the private sector, working for the nuclear energy company Areva.
Political career[edit | edit source]
Philippe began his political career as a member of the Socialist Party but later joined the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP), which later became The Republicans. He served as the Mayor of Le Havre from 2010 to 2017 and was re-elected in 2020.
Prime Minister of France[edit | edit source]
In May 2017, Philippe was appointed as Prime Minister of France by President Emmanuel Macron. During his tenure, he oversaw several key reforms, including changes to the labour laws and the pension system. He also managed the government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic in France.
Post-Prime Ministerial career[edit | edit source]
After stepping down as Prime Minister in July 2020, Philippe returned to his role as Mayor of Le Havre. In 2021, he founded the Horizons party, positioning it as a centrist force in French politics.
Personal life[edit | edit source]
Philippe is married to Édith Chabre, and they have three children. He is known for his love of literature and boxing.
