Δ5-Androstenediol
Δ5-Androstenediol (also known as 5-Androstenediol, Androst-5-ene-3β,17β-diol) is a steroid hormone that is a direct metabolite of the most abundant steroid produced by the human adrenal cortex, DHEA. It is less androgenic than DHEA and exerts significant estrogenic effects.
Chemistry[edit | edit source]
Δ5-Androstenediol is a androstane steroid and a delta-5 steroid. It is also a prohormone by being a precursor to testosterone.
Biological function[edit | edit source]
Δ5-Androstenediol is converted into testosterone via the enzyme 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. It can also be converted into estrone via aromatase, an enzyme that converts testosterone into estrone.
Clinical significance[edit | edit source]
Δ5-Androstenediol has been investigated for use in treating menopause and osteoporosis, but it is not widely used for these indications. It has also been studied for use in treating hypogonadism.
