1,2-Naphthoquinone

1,2-Naphthoquinone is an organic compound with the formula C10H6O2. It is one of the two isomeric naphthoquinones, the other being 1,4-naphthoquinone. 1,2-Naphthoquinone forms by oxidation of 1,2-dihydronaphthalene.

Structure and properties[edit | edit source]

1,2-Naphthoquinone is a yellow solid. It is a quinone, an aromatic compound that has two carbonyl groups, C=O, located on the ring. The molecule is planar. It has a molar mass of 158.15 g/mol.

Synthesis[edit | edit source]

1,2-Naphthoquinone can be prepared by oxidation of 1,2-dihydronaphthalene with chromic acid.

Applications[edit | edit source]

1,2-Naphthoquinone is used as a dye and as a fungicide. It is also used in the synthesis of certain pharmaceuticals.

Health effects[edit | edit source]

Exposure to 1,2-Naphthoquinone can cause skin and eye irritation. It is also harmful if swallowed or inhaled.
