2-Chloromethylpyridine
2-Chloromethylpyridine is an organic compound with the chemical formula C6H6ClN. It is a derivative of pyridine, with a chloromethyl group (-CH2Cl) attached to one of the carbon atoms in the pyridine ring.
Chemical Properties[edit | edit source]
2-Chloromethylpyridine is a colorless liquid at room temperature. It has a strong, unpleasant odor. The compound is soluble in most organic solvents, but is not soluble in water. It is a strong base, due to the presence of the nitrogen atom in the pyridine ring.
Synthesis[edit | edit source]
2-Chloromethylpyridine can be synthesized by the reaction of pyridine with chloromethane in the presence of a base, such as sodium hydroxide. The reaction proceeds via a nucleophilic substitution mechanism, with the base deprotonating the chloromethane to form a carbanion, which then attacks the pyridine ring.
Uses[edit | edit source]
2-Chloromethylpyridine is used as a reagent in the synthesis of various pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. It is also used as a building block in the synthesis of various heterocyclic compounds.
Safety[edit | edit source]
2-Chloromethylpyridine is a highly reactive compound and should be handled with care. It can cause burns and eye damage. It is also harmful if inhaled, swallowed, or comes into contact with skin.
