2-TEDC

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

2-TEDC, or 2-Thiophenecarboxaldehyde, is an organic compound with the molecular formula C5H4OS. It is a derivative of thiophene, a five-membered aromatic ring containing sulfur. 2-TEDC is characterized by the presence of an aldehyde group attached to the second carbon of the thiophene ring.

Structure and Properties[edit | edit source]

2-TEDC is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a distinct odor. The presence of the aldehyde group makes it reactive, particularly in nucleophilic addition reactions. The thiophene ring contributes to its aromaticity, which influences its chemical behavior and stability.

Physical Properties[edit | edit source]

  • Molecular Weight: 112.15 g/mol
  • Boiling Point: 194-196 °C
  • Density: 1.19 g/cm³
  • Solubility: Slightly soluble in water, soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether.

Chemical Properties[edit | edit source]

2-TEDC can undergo typical reactions of aldehydes, such as oxidation to form carboxylic acids or reduction to form alcohols. The thiophene ring can participate in electrophilic substitution reactions, similar to other aromatic compounds.

Synthesis[edit | edit source]

2-TEDC can be synthesized through the Vilsmeier-Haack reaction, which involves the formylation of thiophene using phosphorus oxychloride (POCl3) and dimethylformamide (DMF) as reagents. This method is efficient for introducing the formyl group at the 2-position of the thiophene ring.

Applications[edit | edit source]

2-TEDC is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of various pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and dyes. Its reactivity makes it a valuable building block in organic synthesis, particularly in the development of heterocyclic compounds.

Safety and Handling[edit | edit source]

2-TEDC should be handled with care, as it can be irritating to the skin and eyes. Proper personal protective equipment, such as gloves and goggles, should be used when handling this compound. It should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from sources of ignition.
