2017 pro-jallikattu protests
== 2017 Pro-Jallikattu Protests ==
The 2017 pro-Jallikattu protests were a series of demonstrations in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu that took place in January 2017. The protests were in response to a ban on the traditional bull-taming sport of Jallikattu, which is typically held during the Pongal festival.
Background[edit | edit source]
Jallikattu is a traditional event in Tamil Nadu, where participants attempt to grab a bull by its horns and hold on to it for a certain distance or time. The sport has been a part of Tamil culture for over 2,000 years. However, concerns over animal cruelty led to a ban by the Supreme Court of India in May 2014, following a petition by animal rights organizations such as the Animal Welfare Board of India and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
Protests[edit | edit source]
The protests began on January 8, 2017, in the town of Alanganallur, which is famous for its Jallikattu events. The movement quickly gained momentum, spreading to other parts of Tamil Nadu, including the state capital, Chennai. The largest gathering took place at Marina Beach in Chennai, where thousands of people, including students, professionals, and celebrities, participated.
Protesters demanded the lifting of the ban on Jallikattu, arguing that it was an integral part of Tamil culture and tradition. They also called for the removal of PETA from India, accusing the organization of being insensitive to local customs.
Government Response[edit | edit source]
The Government of Tamil Nadu initially tried to negotiate with the protesters, but the demonstrations continued to grow. On January 23, 2017, the state government passed an ordinance to allow Jallikattu, which was later approved by the President of India. The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly also passed a bill to amend the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, effectively legalizing Jallikattu.
Aftermath[edit | edit source]
The protests were largely peaceful, but there were some instances of violence, particularly on January 23, when clashes broke out between protesters and the police. The protests had a significant impact on Tamil Nadu politics, highlighting the importance of cultural identity and local traditions.
