2020 United States presidential election
The 2020 United States presidential election was held on Tuesday, November 3, 2020. It was the 59th quadrennial presidential election, in which voters selected presidential electors who in turn voted on December 14, 2020, to either elect a new president and vice president or re-elect the incumbents. The election took place against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, which had significant impacts on the election process, including an unprecedented increase in mail-in voting.
Candidates[edit | edit source]
The major candidates in the 2020 presidential election were the incumbent president, Donald Trump, a Republican, and the former vice president, Joe Biden, a Democrat.
Republican Party[edit | edit source]
Donald Trump ran for re-election with his vice president, Mike Pence. The Trump campaign focused on themes of economic growth, immigration control, and "law and order."
Democratic Party[edit | edit source]
Joe Biden was the Democratic nominee, with Kamala Harris as his running mate. Biden's campaign emphasized unity, healthcare reform, and addressing climate change.
Election Process[edit | edit source]
The election was marked by a significant increase in mail-in voting due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many states expanded mail-in voting options to ensure voter safety. This led to a record voter turnout, with over 159 million Americans casting their votes.
Results[edit | edit source]
Joe Biden won the election with 306 electoral votes to Donald Trump's 232. Biden received over 81 million votes, the most in U.S. history, while Trump received over 74 million votes, the second-most in history.
Controversies[edit | edit source]
The election was followed by numerous legal challenges and claims of voter fraud by the Trump campaign, which were largely dismissed by courts. The election results were certified by Congress on January 6, 2021, after a violent attack on the United States Capitol by Trump supporters.
Inauguration[edit | edit source]
Joe Biden was inaugurated as the 46th president of the United States on January 20, 2021. Kamala Harris became the first female vice president, as well as the first African American and Asian American vice president.
