The 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine is a major military conflict that began on 24 February 2022, when Russia launched a large-scale invasion of Ukraine. This marked a significant escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War, which began in 2014 following Russia's annexation of Crimea. The invasion has led to widespread international condemnation and has resulted in severe economic sanctions against Russia.

Background[edit | edit source]

The roots of the conflict can be traced back to the Euromaidan protests in 2013-2014, which led to the ousting of Ukraine's pro-Russian president, Viktor Yanukovych. In response, Russia annexed Crimea in March 2014, a move that was widely condemned by the international community. The annexation was followed by the outbreak of conflict in the Donbas region, where pro-Russian separatists declared independence from Ukraine.

Prelude to the Invasion[edit | edit source]

In the months leading up to the invasion, Russia amassed a large number of troops along its border with Ukraine. Despite diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation, tensions remained high. On 21 February 2022, Russia recognized the independence of the self-declared Donetsk People's Republic and Luhansk People's Republic, further escalating the situation.

The Invasion[edit | edit source]

On 24 February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" in Ukraine, and Russian forces began a full-scale invasion. The invasion involved airstrikes on military targets across Ukraine, as well as ground invasions from multiple directions.

Initial Phase[edit | edit source]

The initial phase of the invasion saw rapid advances by Russian forces, particularly in the south and east of Ukraine. However, Ukrainian resistance was stronger than anticipated, and major cities such as Kyiv and Kharkiv remained under Ukrainian control.

Ongoing Conflict[edit | edit source]

As of the present, the conflict remains ongoing, with significant fighting in the eastern regions of Ukraine. The war has resulted in a humanitarian crisis, with millions of Ukrainians displaced and thousands of casualties reported.

International Response[edit | edit source]

The invasion has been met with widespread condemnation from the international community. The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution demanding Russia withdraw its forces from Ukraine. Numerous countries have imposed economic sanctions on Russia, targeting its financial, energy, and defense sectors.

Humanitarian Impact[edit | edit source]

The conflict has led to a severe humanitarian crisis, with millions of people displaced both within Ukraine and as refugees in neighboring countries. International organizations have been providing aid, but the situation remains dire.
