2C (psychedelics)

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

2C (psychedelics) is a class of psychoactive drugs specifically known as phenethylamines. The 2C family is characterized by its psychedelic effects, which can include altered thinking processes, closed and open eye visuals, synesthesia, an altered sense of time, and spiritual experiences. The name "2C" comes from the two carbon atoms (2C) in the molecular structure common to these compounds.

History[edit | edit source]

The 2C family of drugs was first synthesized and studied by Alexander Shulgin, a renowned American medicinal chemist and psychopharmacologist. Shulgin's work, documented in his books PiHKAL and TiHKAL, has been instrumental in the understanding and classification of many psychedelic substances.

Chemistry[edit | edit source]

2C drugs are substituted phenethylamines, a class of compounds that also includes amphetamines and cathinones. They are characterized by a phenethylamine backbone with various functional groups attached. The 2C designation refers to the two carbon atoms between the benzene ring and the amino group.

Effects[edit | edit source]

The effects of 2C drugs can vary greatly depending on the specific compound and the dosage taken. However, common effects include visual hallucinations, changes in perception, euphoria, and increased introspection. Some users also report experiencing synesthesia, a phenomenon where senses are perceived as interlinked.

Legal Status[edit | edit source]

The legal status of 2C drugs varies by country and by specific compound. In many countries, including the United States, many 2C compounds are classified as Schedule I drugs, making their manufacture, distribution, or possession illegal.

Health Risks[edit | edit source]

While 2C drugs are often used recreationally for their psychedelic effects, they also carry potential health risks. These can include psychological effects such as anxiety and paranoia, as well as physical effects such as increased heart rate and blood pressure.
