Entactogen

Entactogen is a class of psychoactive drugs that produce experiences of emotional communion, oneness, relatedness, emotional openness—that is, empathy or sympathy—as particularly observed and reported for experiences with MDMA (Ecstasy). The term was coined by David E. Nichols as a portmanteau of "entactos" (touching within) and "gen" (to produce) to avoid the ambiguities and cultural overlays associated with the term "empathogen".

History

The term "entactogen" was coined in the 1980s by David E. Nichols, a Professor of Pharmacology at Purdue University. He created the term to avoid the potentially misleading connotations of the term "empathogen", which could imply a drug that induces empathy. Nichols wanted to emphasize the ability of these drugs to facilitate self-exploration and emotional healing.

Pharmacology

Entactogens are a class of drugs that include substances such as MDMA, MDEA, and MBDB. These drugs are primarily serotonin releasers, with secondary effects on dopamine and norepinephrine systems. They are known to produce a sense of inner peace, acceptance, and empathy.

Effects

The effects of entactogens can vary greatly, depending on the specific drug and the individual user. However, common effects include feelings of love, empathy, and connection with others; increased self-awareness and introspection; and enhanced sensory perception. Some users also report experiencing visual and auditory hallucinations.

Risks

The legal status of entactogens varies by country. In many places, including the United States, MDMA and other entactogens are classified as Schedule I drugs, meaning they are illegal to manufacture, distribute, or possess.
