4-Androstenediol
4-Androstenediol (also known as 4-AD, Androst-4-ene-3β,17β-diol, 17β-Hydroxyandrost-4-ene-3-one, or 4-Andro) is a androstenediol that is converted to testosterone. The conversion rate is about 15.76%, compared to DHEA's conversion rate of about 0.76%. It is closer to testosterone structurally than any other legally available supplement.
Chemical structure and properties[edit | edit source]
4-Androstenediol is a type of androstenediol, which are types of androgens. Androgens are hormones that play a role in male traits and reproductive activity. It is named for the Androstane carbon structure, with the specific name 4-Androstenediol referring to the two hydroxyl groups at carbon 4.
Uses and effects[edit | edit source]
4-Androstenediol is used in the body to produce testosterone. This makes it a popular supplement for athletes and bodybuilders looking to increase their testosterone levels. However, because it is a prohormone, it is banned by many sports organizations.
Side effects and risks[edit | edit source]
Like other prohormones, 4-Androstenediol can have side effects. These can include acne, hair loss, prostate enlargement, and a decrease in HDL cholesterol. It can also convert to estrogen, which can lead to gynecomastia (enlarged breasts in men) and water retention.
Legal status[edit | edit source]
In the United States, 4-Androstenediol is classified as a Schedule III Controlled Substance, making it illegal to sell without a prescription. It is also banned by many sports organizations due to its potential to enhance performance.
