4-Methyl-N-ethylcathinone
4-Methyl-N-ethylcathinone (4-MEC) is a synthetic stimulant of the cathinone class that has been sold online as a designer drug. It is a derivative of cathinone, one of the psychoactive compounds found in the khat plant. Cathinones are a sub-category of amphetamines, sharing core amphetamine structure but with a beta-keto group on the side chain. The introduction of the ethyl group to the nitrogen atom in 4-MEC differentiates it structurally from methcathinone, a related compound with similar psychoactive properties.
Chemistry[edit | edit source]
4-Methyl-N-ethylcathinone is a synthetic cathinone with the molecular formula C12H17NO. It features a core phenethylamine structure with an alkyl group attached to the alpha carbon and an oxygen group attached to the beta carbon. The methyl group at the para position of the phenyl ring and the ethyl group attached to the nitrogen atom are the modifications that give 4-MEC its name and distinguish it from other cathinones.
Pharmacology[edit | edit source]
The pharmacological action of 4-MEC is primarily as a central nervous system stimulant. It is believed to work by increasing the release of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine in the brain, leading to euphoric and stimulating effects. However, detailed studies on its pharmacodynamics are limited, and much of the understanding of its effects comes from user reports and comparisons to other cathinones.
Effects[edit | edit source]
Users of 4-MEC have reported effects similar to those of MDMA, cocaine, and other stimulant drugs, including euphoria, increased energy, enhanced sociability, and heightened sensory perception. However, adverse effects are also reported, which can include anxiety, paranoia, tachycardia, hypertension, and in severe cases, harm to the cardiovascular system or acute psychological distress.
Legal Status[edit | edit source]
The legal status of 4-MEC varies by country but has been increasingly controlled due to concerns over its potential for abuse and harm. In many jurisdictions, it has been classified as a controlled substance, making its manufacture, distribution, and possession illegal.
