5-MeO-αET

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

5-MeO-αET (5-methoxy-alpha-ethyltryptamine) is a psychedelic and hallucinogenic drug, used recreationally for its psychoactive effects. It is a member of the tryptamine chemical class and is structurally similar to other tryptamine-based substances like DMT and psilocybin.

Chemistry[edit | edit source]

5-MeO-αET is a synthetic compound of the tryptamine class. Tryptamines share a core structure comprised of a bicyclic indole heterocycle attached at R3 to an amino group via an ethyl side chain. 5-MeO-αET is substituted at R5 of its indole heterocycle with a methoxy (MeO) functional group CH3O−. It also contains two ethyl chains bound to the terminal amine RN of its tryptamine backbone (αET).

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

The mechanism of action for 5-MeO-αET is not fully understood. It is thought to act as a serotonin receptor agonist, similar to other psychedelic tryptamines. This means it binds to and activates the serotonin receptors in the brain, leading to its psychedelic effects.

Effects[edit | edit source]

The effects of 5-MeO-αET can vary greatly depending on the dose taken. At lower doses, effects can include feelings of euphoria, visual hallucinations, and altered perception of time. At higher doses, effects can become more intense and can include profound hallucinations, out-of-body experiences, and changes in perception of reality.

Legal Status[edit | edit source]

The legal status of 5-MeO-αET varies by country. In some countries, it is a controlled substance, while in others it is completely legal. It is always important to check the legal status of a substance in your country before possession or use.
