7-Keto-DHEA

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

7-Keto-DHEA (also known as 7-Keto-dehydroepiandrosterone) is a steroid metabolite of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). It is often used as a dietary supplement due to its potential benefits in weight loss, immune function, and aging.

History[edit | edit source]

7-Keto-DHEA was first identified in 1966 and has since been the subject of numerous scientific studies. It is a naturally occurring byproduct of DHEA, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands.

Structure and Function[edit | edit source]

7-Keto-DHEA is structurally similar to DHEA but differs in the position of a ketone group. This small change significantly alters the hormone's activity. Unlike DHEA, 7-Keto-DHEA is not converted into androgens or estrogens, sex hormones that can have powerful effects on the body.

Uses and Benefits[edit | edit source]

7-Keto-DHEA is most commonly used as a weight loss supplement. Some research suggests that it may increase metabolism and promote fat burning. It may also have benefits for immune function, memory, and longevity. However, more research is needed to confirm these effects and understand their mechanisms.

Safety and Side Effects[edit | edit source]

While 7-Keto-DHEA is generally considered safe for short-term use, long-term safety is unknown. Potential side effects include nausea, dizziness, and heart palpitations. As with any supplement, it's important to consult a healthcare provider before starting 7-Keto-DHEA.
