Alan John Percivale Taylor (25 March 1906 7 September 1990) was a British historian who specialized in 19th- and 20th-century European diplomacy. He was known for his accessible writing style and his controversial views on historical events.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

A. J. P. Taylor was born in Birkdale, near Southport, Lancashire, England. He was educated at various schools, including Bootham School in York, and later attended Oriel College, Oxford, where he studied modern history.

Academic Career[edit | edit source]

Taylor began his academic career as a lecturer in history at the University of Manchester in 1930. He later became a fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford, where he taught until 1976. During his time at Oxford, Taylor became known for his engaging lectures and his ability to communicate complex historical ideas to a broad audience.

Taylor's most famous works include "The Struggle for Mastery in Europe 1848 1918" and "The Origins of the Second World War". In "The Origins of the Second World War", Taylor argued that Adolf Hitler was an opportunist rather than a planner, a view that sparked considerable debate among historians.
