ANGPTL3

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

ANGPTL3 (Angiopoietin-like 3) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the ANGPTL3 gene. It is a member of the angiopoietin-like family of secreted factors. ANGPTL3 is involved in lipid metabolism, and its inhibition has been associated with decreased levels of triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C).

Function[edit | edit source]

ANGPTL3 is a protein that is secreted by the liver and has been shown to inhibit lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and endothelial lipase (EL), enzymes involved in the metabolism of triglycerides and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). By inhibiting these enzymes, ANGPTL3 increases the levels of triglycerides and decreases the levels of HDL-C in the blood.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

Mutations in the ANGPTL3 gene have been associated with familial combined hypolipidemia, a condition characterized by abnormally low levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. In addition, inhibition of ANGPTL3 has been proposed as a potential therapeutic strategy for the treatment of hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis.
