ARIAD Pharmaceuticals is an American biotechnology and pharmaceuticals company that was founded in 1991. The company is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and it focuses on the discovery, development, and commercialization of small-molecule drugs. ARIAD Pharmaceuticals is known for its work in the field of oncology, particularly in the development of treatments for rare forms of cancer.

ARIAD Pharmaceuticals was founded by Dr. Harvey J. Berger, a former faculty member at the Yale School of Medicine. The company was initially established to develop treatments for cancer and immune system diseases. Over the years, ARIAD Pharmaceuticals has developed several innovative drugs, including ponatinib, a drug used to treat chronic myeloid leukemia and acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

ARIAD Pharmaceuticals has developed a number of drugs that have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These include:

  • Ponatinib (Iclusig): This is a type of tyrosine kinase inhibitor that is used to treat certain types of leukemia. It was approved by the FDA in 2012.
  • Brigatinib (Alunbrig): This is an anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) inhibitor that is used to treat non-small cell lung cancer. It was approved by the FDA in 2017.

Acquisition by Takeda Pharmaceutical Company[edit | edit source]

In 2017, ARIAD Pharmaceuticals was acquired by Takeda Pharmaceutical Company, a Japanese multinational pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical company. The acquisition was valued at approximately $5.2 billion.
