Abadan

Abadan is a city in and the capital of Abadan County, in Khuzestan Province, Iran. Abadan is located on Abadan Island (68 km long, 3–19 km wide). The island is bounded in the west by the Arvand waterway and to the east by the Bahmanshir outlet of the Karun river, 53 kilometers from the Persian Gulf, near the Iraq border.

Abadan has a long history dating back to the pre-Islamic era. It was known as Apphadana during the Elamite Empire, and later as Abbadan during the Sassanid Empire. The city was largely developed by the Anglo-Persian Oil Company in the early 20th century.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Abadan's economy is largely based on the oil industry. The city is home to the Abadan Refinery, one of the largest oil refineries in the world. Other industries include petrochemicals, textiles, and date processing.

Climate[edit | edit source]

Abadan has a hot desert climate with extremely hot summers and mild winters. The city receives very little rainfall, most of which falls in the winter months.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

The majority of Abadan's population are ethnic Persians, with significant minorities of Arabs, Bakhtiaris, and Afshars.

Education[edit | edit source]

Abadan is home to several educational institutions, including Abadan University of Medical Sciences and Petroleum University of Technology.
