- Aberdeen was first settled by European Americans in 1834 and was incorporated a year later. The city was named after Aberdeen, Scotland, in honor of the Scottish settlers who were among the first Europeans to live in the area.

- Aberdeen is located in northeastern Mississippi, along the banks of the Tombigbee River. The city covers an area of 15.6 square miles, of which 0.4 square miles is water.
