Abu Dhabi is the capital and the second most populous city of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Located on an island in the Persian Gulf, off the Central West Coast, most of the city and the Emirate reside on the mainland connected to the rest of the country. As of the latest updates, Abu Dhabi houses the United Arab Emirates Government and the President of the United Arab Emirates.

Abu Dhabi's history dates back to the 3rd millennium BCE, and it was originally a nomadic herding and fishing community. The city's development accelerated in the 20th century after the discovery of oil. The revenues generated from oil and gas production have been instrumental in transforming Abu Dhabi into a modern city with a high standard of living.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Abu Dhabi is situated in the northeastern part of the Persian Gulf in the Arabian Peninsula. The city is characterized by its hot desert climate, with hot summers and mild winters. It is known for its skyline's modern towers and shopping megacenters such as Abu Dhabi Mall and Marina Mall.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of Abu Dhabi is largely based upon the oil and gas sector, with the emirate holding 9% of the world's proven oil reserves and almost 5% of the world's natural gas. However, the government has been making efforts to diversify the economy through investments in financial services, tourism, and certain types of manufacturing.

Abu Dhabi is a cultural hub in the Middle East. It is home to several cultural institutions including the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Zayed National Museum, and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi which is under construction. The city also hosts the Abu Dhabi Film Festival and the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The city has a number of educational institutions, from primary schools to universities. Notable higher education institutions include Khalifa University, United Arab Emirates University, and Abu Dhabi University.

Abu Dhabi is served by the Abu Dhabi International Airport, which is the second largest in the UAE. Public transportation within the city includes buses and taxis, while the government has plans to develop a metro and tram system.
