Academy Award for Best Animated Feature
The Academy Award for Best Animated Feature is an Academy Award presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to recognize excellence in animated feature films. The award was first introduced in 2001 for films released in 2001.

The category was created after the success and increasing popularity of animated films in the 1990s, particularly those produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar Animation Studios. The first recipient of the award was Shrek, produced by DreamWorks Animation.
Criteria[edit | edit source]
To be eligible for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, a film must be at least 40 minutes long and use a significant amount of animation. The animation must figure in no less than 75 percent of the running time, and a significant number of the major characters must be animated.

The award has been given to a variety of films from different studios. Notable winners include Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Toy Story 3, and Frozen. Pixar has been particularly successful in this category, winning numerous times.
