Academy of Medical Sciences
Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS) is a professional body and learned society in the United Kingdom dedicated to the promotion of advances in medical science and the development of medical research and its translation into benefits for society. Established in 1998, the AMS represents the diverse spectrum of medical science in the UK, from basic research through clinical application to healthcare delivery.
History[edit | edit source]
The Academy of Medical Sciences was founded in 1998, following a proposal by the Medical Research Council and the British Medical Association. The aim was to create a body that would bring together the UK's most eminent and distinguished medical scientists to promote advances in medical science and ensure its translation into benefits for patients and the public.
Role and Activities[edit | edit source]
The Academy of Medical Sciences carries out a wide range of activities to support and promote excellence in medical science. These include:
- Policy work: The AMS provides independent, evidence-based policy advice to government and other decision-makers on issues relating to medical science and healthcare. This includes producing reports, responses to consultations, and hosting policy events.
- Fellowship: The AMS elects to its Fellowship individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the progress of medical science, delivered significant innovations in healthcare, or made a high level of service to the medical profession. Fellows are drawn from a wide range of specialisms, including basic and clinical sciences, veterinary science, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, allied health professions and the medical and health science professions.
- Mentoring and career development: The AMS runs a range of programmes to support the career development of researchers in medical science. This includes a mentoring scheme, career development events, and grants and awards.
- Promoting dialogue about medical science: The AMS organises a range of events and activities to promote dialogue about medical science and its impact on society. This includes public lectures, debates, workshops and symposia.
