The Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (ASCR) is a leading scientific institution in the Czech Republic, dedicated to conducting research in a wide range of scientific disciplines. Established in 1992, the ASCR serves as a central body for scientific research and development, fostering collaboration among various research institutes and universities within the country and internationally.

History[edit | edit source]

The Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic was founded following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, succeeding the former Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. Its establishment marked a significant reorganization of scientific research in the newly independent Czech Republic, aiming to enhance the quality and impact of scientific endeavors.

Structure[edit | edit source]

The ASCR is composed of over 50 research institutes, each specializing in different fields such as physics, chemistry, biology, earth sciences, social sciences, and humanities. These institutes are organized into three main divisions:

  • Division of Mathematics, Physics, and Earth Sciences
  • Division of Chemical and Life Sciences
  • Division of Humanities and Social Sciences

Each division is responsible for coordinating research activities and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration among its institutes.

Research and Development[edit | edit source]

The ASCR is committed to advancing scientific knowledge and innovation. It supports basic and applied research projects, often in collaboration with universities, industry, and international partners. The Academy also plays a crucial role in advising the Czech government on scientific and technological issues.

International Collaboration[edit | edit source]

The ASCR actively participates in international scientific networks and projects. It is a member of several global organizations, such as the European Science Foundation and the International Council for Science. These collaborations facilitate the exchange of knowledge and resources, enhancing the global impact of Czech scientific research.

Funding[edit | edit source]

The Academy's research activities are primarily funded by the Czech government, with additional support from European Union grants and private sector partnerships. The ASCR also competes for international research grants to support its projects.

Education and Outreach[edit | edit source]

In addition to research, the ASCR is involved in educational activities, offering training programs for young scientists and organizing public lectures and exhibitions to promote science literacy among the general public.
