After the Fire

After the Fire is a British rock band that gained significant attention and popularity in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Known for their progressive rock sound that later evolved into a more new wave and pop rock style, After the Fire is best remembered for their hit single "Der Kommissar," a song that achieved international success and has been covered by numerous artists.

History[edit | edit source]

After the Fire was formed in England in 1971, initially starting as a progressive rock band with a strong emphasis on keyboards and synthesizers. The original lineup consisted of Peter Banks (vocals, keyboards), John Russell (guitar), Nick Battle (bass), and Ivor Twidell (drums). Over the years, the band underwent several lineup changes, with Banks being the constant member throughout its active years.

The band's early work was characterized by complex musical arrangements and thought-provoking lyrics, drawing influences from other progressive rock acts of the time. However, by the late 1970s, After the Fire began to shift towards a more accessible sound, incorporating elements of new wave and pop rock into their music. This transition helped the band reach a wider audience and gain commercial success.

Breakthrough and Success[edit | edit source]

After the Fire's breakthrough came with the release of their album Laser Love in 1979, which featured a more mainstream sound. However, it was the 1982 release of the single "Der Kommissar," a catchy song with a distinctive synth riff, that catapulted the band to international fame. The song was a cover of an Austrian track by Falco, with English lyrics. "Der Kommissar" reached the top of the charts in several countries and remains the band's most well-known song.

Despite the success of "Der Kommissar," After the Fire struggled to replicate its success with subsequent releases. The band released a few more albums and singles but failed to achieve significant chart success. The changing musical landscape of the mid-1980s, along with internal tensions within the band, led to After the Fire's disbandment in 1983.

Post-Breakup and Legacy[edit | edit source]

After disbanding, members of After the Fire pursued various projects, with Peter Banks continuing to work in the music industry in different capacities. The band's music, particularly "Der Kommissar," has been covered and sampled by various artists, showcasing its enduring appeal.

In the 2000s, After the Fire reunited for several live performances and tours, playing their classic hits as well as new material. The band's influence on the new wave and pop rock genres, as well as their memorable hit "Der Kommissar," has cemented their place in music history.
