Ahiman Rezon
Ahiman Rezon is the title of a book of constitutions for Freemasonry authored by Laurence Dermott. The book was first published in 1756 and served as the constitution for the Ancient Grand Lodge of England, which was also known as the "Ancients" or "Atholl Masons." The title "Ahiman Rezon" is often interpreted to mean "A Help to a Brother," although the exact translation and origin of the phrase are subjects of debate among Masonic scholars.
History[edit | edit source]
The Ancient Grand Lodge of England was formed in 1751 as a rival to the Premier Grand Lodge of England, which had been established in 1717. Laurence Dermott, who served as the Grand Secretary of the Ancients, compiled and published the Ahiman Rezon to provide a formal constitution and set of regulations for the new Grand Lodge. The book was intended to offer guidance on Masonic practices, rituals, and governance.
Content[edit | edit source]
Ahiman Rezon includes a variety of materials, such as:
- The history and origins of Freemasonry
- The duties and responsibilities of Masonic officers
- Instructions for Masonic rituals and ceremonies
- Rules and regulations for the governance of Masonic lodges
- A collection of Masonic songs and poems
The book also contains a preface written by Dermott, in which he criticizes the Premier Grand Lodge and defends the practices of the Ancients.
Editions[edit | edit source]
Several editions of Ahiman Rezon were published during the 18th and 19th centuries, with each edition incorporating updates and revisions. The book was widely used by Masonic lodges affiliated with the Ancients and influenced the development of Masonic constitutions in other jurisdictions.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Ahiman Rezon played a significant role in the history of Freemasonry, particularly in the development of the Ancient Grand Lodge of England. The book's influence extended beyond England, as it was also used by Masonic lodges in Ireland, Scotland, and North America. The principles and regulations outlined in Ahiman Rezon continue to be studied by Masonic scholars and practitioners.
