Alarplasty

Alarplasty is a surgical procedure that modifies the width and shape of the nostrils for both aesthetic and functional purposes. It is often performed as part of rhinoplasty, but can also be done as a standalone procedure.

Alarplasty, also known as alar base reduction, is a surgical procedure that aims to improve the appearance of the nose by reducing the width of the nostrils. It is often performed in conjunction with other nose surgeries, such as rhinoplasty or septoplasty, but can also be done as a standalone procedure.

The procedure involves making incisions on the inside or outside of the nostrils and removing excess tissue. The remaining tissue is then reshaped and sutured back together to create a more aesthetically pleasing nostril shape.

Indications

Alarplasty is often indicated for individuals who are unhappy with the width or shape of their nostrils. This can include those who feel their nostrils are too wide, too flared, or not symmetrical. It can also be indicated for individuals who have difficulty breathing due to the shape of their nostrils.

Procedure

The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia. The surgeon will make incisions either inside the nostrils or along the natural crease where the nostril meets the cheek. Excess tissue is then removed and the remaining tissue is reshaped and sutured back together. The procedure typically takes about one to two hours to complete.

Recovery

Recovery from alarplasty is typically quick, with most patients able to return to normal activities within a week. There may be some swelling and bruising, but this usually subsides within a few days.

Risks and Complications

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with alarplasty. These can include infection, bleeding, scarring, and changes in sensation. There is also the risk that the patient may not be satisfied with the aesthetic outcome of the surgery.
