Alaska native
Alaska Native refers to the indigenous peoples of Alaska, United States, including the Inuit, Yupik, Aleut, and several Native American tribes. The term often includes the Alaska Native Corporation, a group of 12 regional corporations established by the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971.
History[edit | edit source]
The history of Alaska Natives is rich and complex, dating back thousands of years. The Aleutian Islands were inhabited by the Aleut people, while the Inuit and Yupik lived in the northern and western parts of Alaska. The Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples resided in the southeastern part of the state.
Culture[edit | edit source]
Alaska Native cultures are diverse and have deep roots. Traditional practices and knowledge, such as subsistence hunting and fishing, are still important in many communities. Alaska Natives also have a strong tradition of storytelling, with oral histories passed down through generations.
Alaska Native Corporations[edit | edit source]
The Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971 led to the establishment of the Alaska Native Corporation, a group of 12 regional corporations and over 200 village corporations. These corporations manage lands and resources for the benefit of their shareholders, most of whom are Alaska Natives.
Health and Social Issues[edit | edit source]
Alaska Natives face a number of health and social issues, including higher rates of alcoholism, suicide, and chronic disease than the general U.S. population. Efforts are being made to address these issues, including through the work of the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium and other organizations.
Education[edit | edit source]
Education is a key issue for Alaska Natives. Many communities have their own schools, and there are also a number of programs and scholarships available to Alaska Native students, such as the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program.
