Fishing is the activity of trying to catch fish. Fish are normally caught in the wild. Techniques for catching fish include hand gathering, spearing, netting, angling and trapping.

Types of Fishing[edit | edit source]

There are various types of fishing like Recreational fishing, Commercial fishing, and Artisanal fishing. These are fishing primarily for pleasure or competition. Commercial fishing includes catching fish for sale, whereas artisanal fishing includes fishing for subsistence.

Fishing Techniques[edit | edit source]

There are many fishing techniques and tactics for catching fish. The term can also be applied to methods for catching other aquatic animals such as molluscs (shellfish, squid, octopus) and edible marine invertebrates.

Hand Gathering[edit | edit source]

This is an ancient method of fishing and includes gathering by hand, diving, spearing, netting, angling and trapping. It may be done for either commercial or recreational purposes.

Spearfishing[edit | edit source]

Spearfishing is an ancient method of fishing that has been used throughout the world for millennia. Early civilizations were familiar with the custom of spearing fish from rivers and streams using sharpened sticks.

Netting[edit | edit source]

Netting is another method of fishing. This involves creating a net to trap fish. These nets can be floated at the surface or sunk to the bottom of the sea.

Angling[edit | edit source]

Angling is a method of fishing, specifically the practice of catching fish by means of an "angle" (fish hook). The hook is usually attached to a fishing line and the line is often attached to a fishing rod.

Trapping[edit | edit source]

Trapping is a method of fishing where a trap is set and left for a certain period of time. After the time has passed, the trap is checked to see if any fish have entered the trap.
