Alfred Broughton 1950

Alfred Broughton (18 October 1902 – 2 April 1979) was a British Labour Party politician and physician. He served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Batley and Morley from 1949 until his death in 1979.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Alfred Broughton was born on 18 October 1902. He pursued a career in medicine, studying at the University of Edinburgh where he earned his medical degree. He later became a general practitioner in West Yorkshire.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Broughton entered politics as a member of the Labour Party. He was elected as the MP for Batley and Morley in a by-election in 1949, following the death of the previous MP, Hubert Beaumont. Broughton held the seat until his own death in 1979.

During his time in Parliament, Broughton was known for his dedication to his constituents and his work on health-related issues. He was a member of several parliamentary committees and was particularly active in debates on the National Health Service.

Death and Legacy[edit | edit source]

Alfred Broughton passed away on 2 April 1979. His death came just days before a crucial vote of no confidence in the government of James Callaghan, which led to the fall of the Labour government and the subsequent general election.
