The University of Edinburgh (Latin: Universitas Academica Edinburgensis ) is a public university in Edinburgh, Scotland. Founded in 1582, it is the sixth oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of Scotland's ancient universities. The university is deeply embedded in the fabric of the city of Edinburgh, with many of its buildings located in the historic Old Town and New Town areas.

The University of Edinburgh was established by a Royal Charter granted by James VI of Scotland in 1582. It opened its doors to students in 1583, making it one of the oldest universities in the world. The university played a pivotal role during the Scottish Enlightenment and has been associated with many notable figures, including David Hume, Adam Smith, and Charles Darwin.

The University of Edinburgh is organized into three colleges: the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, the College of Science and Engineering, and the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Each college is further divided into schools that offer a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

The university is renowned for its research output and is a member of the prestigious Russell Group of research-intensive universities in the United Kingdom. It is also part of the League of European Research Universities and the Universitas 21 network.

The George Square campus houses the Main Library, one of the largest academic libraries in Europe.
