They aim to develop patterns of teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in all its branches to demonstrate a high standard of medical education in India. The primary goal is to bring together in one place educational facilities of the highest order for the training of personnel in all important branches of health activity.

History[edit | edit source]

The concept of AIIMS was introduced by the then Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, who sought to establish a medical institution that would serve as a nucleus for nurturing excellence in all aspects of healthcare. The first AIIMS was established in 1956 in New Delhi, following the recommendations of the Bhore Committee, which in 1946 emphasized the need for a large number of doctors for India's expanding health care activities.

Locations[edit | edit source]

As of 2023, there are several AIIMS institutions across India, including in New Delhi, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur, and Rishikesh, among others. The Government of India has plans to set up AIIMS in every state to promote regional balance in quality tertiary level healthcare in the country and attain self-sufficiency in graduate and postgraduate medical education.

Admissions[edit | edit source]

Admission to the undergraduate courses, mainly the MBBS program, is through the All India Institute of Medical Sciences MBBS entrance examination, which is one of the most competitive exams in India. For postgraduate courses, candidates must clear the AIIMS PG entrance exam.

Courses Offered[edit | edit source]

AIIMS institutions offer a variety of courses in medicine, nursing, biotechnology, and paramedical training. The courses range from undergraduate degrees like MBBS to postgraduate degrees like MD, MS, and MCh in various specialties, as well as doctoral programs in research.

AIIMS are also known for their pioneering research in the medical field. They conduct research in various medical and paramedical fields and often collaborate with other national and international research centers and institutions to promote the exchange of knowledge and expertise.

With their state-of-the-art infrastructure and experienced faculty, AIIMS hospitals are equipped to handle an extensive array of medical conditions and emergencies.

Challenges and Criticisms[edit | edit source]

Despite their esteemed status, AIIMS institutions face challenges such as faculty shortages, infrastructural constraints, and the immense pressure of catering to a vast number of patients. These issues sometimes lead to a compromise in the quality of healthcare and education provided.

The All India Institutes of Medical Sciences continue to play a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of medical education and healthcare in India. Their commitment to excellence in education, research, and patient care makes them an integral part of India's healthcare system.
