AIPMT-2011 - Kolkata 2011-04-03 00192

All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT) was an annual medical entrance examination in India. It was conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) until 2016. The test was a gateway for admission to undergraduate medical and dental courses in various government and private medical colleges across the country.

History[edit | edit source]

The AIPMT was introduced in 1988 to standardize the admission process for medical colleges in India. It aimed to reduce the stress on students caused by multiple entrance exams and to ensure a transparent and merit-based selection process.

Examination Structure[edit | edit source]

The AIPMT consisted of a single-stage examination with 180 objective-type questions. The subjects covered included Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Botany and Zoology). The duration of the exam was three hours.

Syllabus[edit | edit source]

The syllabus for AIPMT was based on the NCERT curriculum for classes 11 and 12. It included topics from:

Scoring and Results[edit | edit source]

Each correct answer was awarded four marks, while one mark was deducted for each incorrect answer. The results were usually declared within a month of the examination date. The merit list was prepared based on the scores obtained by the candidates.

Eligibility Criteria[edit | edit source]

To be eligible for AIPMT, candidates had to meet the following criteria:

  • Must be an Indian citizen or Overseas Citizen of India (OCI).
  • Must have completed 17 years of age at the time of admission or will complete the age on or before 31st December of the year of admission.
  • Must have passed the 12th standard examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English as subjects.

Replacement by NEET[edit | edit source]

In 2016, the AIPMT was replaced by the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) following a Supreme Court directive. NEET now serves as the single entrance examination for admission to medical and dental courses across India.

Significance[edit | edit source]

The AIPMT played a crucial role in streamlining the medical admission process in India. It provided a uniform platform for students from different states and educational backgrounds to compete on an equal footing.
