Allakaket
Allakaket is a city in the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area in the U.S. state of Alaska. It is located on the Koyukuk River, near its confluence with the Alatna River. The population of Allakaket was 105 at the 2020 census.

The area around Allakaket has been inhabited by the Koyukon people for thousands of years. The village itself was established in 1906 when a mission and school were built by the Episcopal Church. The name "Allakaket" is derived from the Koyukon word "Aalaa Kkaakk’et," meaning "mouth of the Alatna River."
Geography[edit | edit source]
Allakaket is located at coordinates 66°33′N 152°39′W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.9 square miles (12.7 km²), of which 4.8 square miles (12.4 km²) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) is water.
Climate[edit | edit source]
Allakaket has a subarctic climate (Köppen Dfc) with long, extremely cold winters and short, mild summers. The average temperature in January is -10°F (-23°C), while the average temperature in July is 60°F (16°C).
Demographics[edit | edit source]
As of the 2020 census, there were 105 people, 40 households, and 25 families residing in the city. The population density was 21.9 people per square mile (8.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was predominantly Native American.
Economy[edit | edit source]
The economy of Allakaket is primarily based on subsistence activities, including hunting, fishing, and gathering. Some residents are also employed in local government and services.
Education[edit | edit source]
Allakaket is served by the Yukon-Koyukuk School District. The Allakaket School provides education from kindergarten through 12th grade.
Transportation[edit | edit source]
Allakaket is accessible by air via the Allakaket Airport. There are no roads connecting Allakaket to the rest of Alaska, so transportation is primarily by air or river.
Healthcare[edit | edit source]
Healthcare services in Allakaket are provided by the Allakaket Health Clinic, which is part of the Tanana Chiefs Conference.
