Allen Carr (2 September 1934 – 29 November 2006) was a British author and anti-smoking advocate who is best known for his books and seminars on quitting smoking. His most famous work, The Easy Way to Stop Smoking, has helped millions of people worldwide to quit smoking.

Early Life and Career[edit | edit source]

Allen Carr was born in London, England. He trained as an accountant and worked in the profession for many years. Despite his success in his career, Carr was a heavy smoker, consuming up to 100 cigarettes a day.

The Easyway Method[edit | edit source]

Carr's journey to becoming an anti-smoking advocate began in 1983 when he successfully quit smoking after 33 years of addiction. He developed a method that he called the "Easyway" method, which focuses on understanding the psychological aspects of smoking addiction rather than relying on willpower or nicotine replacement therapies.

The Easyway method is based on the premise that smoking does not actually provide any genuine pleasure or crutch, and that the belief that it does is an illusion. Carr's approach involves removing the fear of quitting and addressing the misconceptions about smoking.

Publications[edit | edit source]

Carr's first book, The Easy Way to Stop Smoking, was published in 1985. It became a bestseller and has been translated into over 30 languages. The success of the book led to the establishment of Allen Carr's Easyway clinics around the world, where trained therapists help smokers quit using Carr's method.

Carr wrote several other books on addiction and self-help, including The Only Way to Stop Smoking Permanently, The Easy Way to Control Alcohol, and The Easy Way to Lose Weight.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Allen Carr passed away from lung cancer in 2006, but his legacy continues through his books and clinics. His method has been praised for its simplicity and effectiveness, and many former smokers credit Carr with helping them quit for good.
