From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Almeric Paget Massage Corps (APMC) was a British organization established in 1914 by Lord Almeric Paget and his wife Lady Pauline Paget. The organization was created to provide therapeutic massage to wounded soldiers during World War I.

History[edit | edit source]

The Almeric Paget Massage Corps was founded at the onset of World War I. Lord Almeric Paget, a British peer and philanthropist, and his wife Lady Pauline Paget, a nurse, recognized the need for therapeutic massage for soldiers returning from the front lines. The organization began with 50 masseuses and quickly grew to over 300 by the end of the war.

The APMC was initially funded by Lord Paget, but as the war progressed and the demand for services increased, the organization received financial support from the British Government. The APMC worked in conjunction with the Royal Army Medical Corps and provided services in military hospitals across the United Kingdom.

Services[edit | edit source]

The Almeric Paget Massage Corps provided therapeutic massage to soldiers suffering from a variety of war-related injuries, including shell shock, neurasthenia, and physical injuries. The organization also provided training for masseuses, ensuring a high standard of care for the soldiers they treated.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

The Almeric Paget Massage Corps played a significant role in the recognition of massage as a therapeutic treatment during World War I. The organization's work laid the foundation for the development of physiotherapy as a recognized medical profession in the United Kingdom.

After the war, the APMC was incorporated into the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, continuing its legacy of providing therapeutic massage and training for future generations of physiotherapists.
