Alpha,N-DMT

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Alpha,N-DMT or N,N-Dimethyltryptamine is a naturally occurring psychedelic compound of the tryptamine family. It is found in a wide variety of plant species, and a single psychoactive toad species, the Colorado River toad.

Chemistry[edit | edit source]

Alpha,N-DMT is a derivative of tryptamine with two additional methyl groups at the amine nitrogen atom. Tryptamine itself is a monoamine alkaloid found in plants, fungi, and animals, and is the backbone for a group of compounds known collectively as tryptamines. This group includes many biologically active compounds, including neurotransmitters and psychedelic drugs.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

The pharmacological action of Alpha,N-DMT is mainly through its activity at the 5-HT2A receptor. The drug is a potent partial agonist for the 5-HT2A receptor and also has a high affinity for the 5-HT2C receptor. The psychedelic effects are believed to come from Alpha,N-DMT's efficacy at the 5-HT2A receptors. However, the role of these interactions and how they result in the psychedelic experience continues to remain an object of scientific elucidation.

Effects[edit | edit source]

The effects of Alpha,N-DMT can be intense and profound, and may include alterations in sensory perception, mood, thought, and sense of self. Some users report experiences of deep introspection, mystical or spiritual experiences, and contact with otherworldly entities.

Legal Status[edit | edit source]

The legal status of Alpha,N-DMT varies by country, but it is controlled in many places under analogue laws due to its structural similarity to other controlled tryptamines.
