The ACNM was established in 1955, with the aim of promoting the health and well-being of women and newborns within their families and communities through the development and support of the profession of midwifery as practiced by certified nurse-midwives, and certified midwives. The organization has grown significantly since its inception, and now represents more than 6,500 midwives across the country.
Mission and Vision[edit | edit source]
The ACNM's mission is to support midwives and advance the practice of midwifery in order to achieve optimal health for women through their lifespan, with a particular focus on reproductive and newborn care. The organization's vision is that every woman in the United States will have access to a midwife's care for herself and her newborn.
