The American Sleep Apnea Association (ASAA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals affected by sleep apnea. Established in 1990 by people with sleep apnea, healthcare providers, and researchers, the association aims to provide education, support, and advocacy services to patients and their families.

Mission[edit | edit source]

The mission of the ASAA is to promote awareness of sleep apnea, advocate for the interests of patients and their families, and provide a platform for collaborative research and innovation in the field of sleep medicine. By working closely with patients, healthcare providers, and researchers, the association seeks to improve the quality of life for people with sleep apnea and their loved ones.

Services and Programs[edit | edit source]

The American Sleep Apnea Association offers a variety of services and programs, including:

  • Education: Providing accessible and up-to-date information on sleep apnea, its diagnosis, and treatment options through their website, publications, and webinars.
  • Support Groups: Facilitating a network of support groups, both in-person and online, where patients and their families can share experiences, ask questions, and offer emotional support to one another.
  • Advocacy: Representing the interests of sleep apnea patients in policy discussions and lobbying for research funding and better access to treatment options.
  • Research: Collaborating with researchers, clinicians, and other stakeholders to advance scientific understanding of sleep apnea and develop new diagnostic tools and treatments.

SleepHealth App and Study[edit | edit source]

  • In partnership with IBM Watson Health, the ASAA developed the SleepHealth App, a mobile application designed to collect data on users' sleep habits and health, and to provide personalized feedback on how to improve sleep quality. The app also serves as a research tool for the SleepHealth study, which aims to better understand the relationship between sleep and overall health, as well as identify potential interventions to improve sleep and well-being.
