American Society For Bioethics And Humanities

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH) is a professional organization dedicated to the promotion of interdisciplinary research and education in bioethics and the humanities. It was established in 1998 through the merger of several existing bioethics organizations, with the aim of promoting the exchange of ideas and fostering a multidisciplinary, inclusive approach to bioethics and health care.

History[edit | edit source]

The ASBH was formed in 1998 through the merger of the Society for Health and Human Values (SHHV), the Society for Bioethics Consultation (SBC), and the American Association of Bioethics (AAB). The merger was intended to create a unified voice for the field of bioethics, and to promote interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration.

Mission and Goals[edit | edit source]

The mission of the ASBH is to promote the understanding and resolution of ethical and societal issues in health care, science, and technology. This is achieved through promoting research, teaching, and public policy, as well as fostering dialogue among various disciplines, including medicine, nursing, law, philosophy, theology, and arts.

Activities[edit | edit source]

The ASBH organizes an annual meeting, which serves as a platform for members to present research, engage in dialogue, and network with colleagues. It also publishes a quarterly journal, the Journal of Clinical Ethics, which features articles on a wide range of ethical issues in health care.

The ASBH also offers a certification program for health care ethics consultants, which is intended to ensure a high standard of competence and professionalism in the field.

Impact[edit | edit source]

The ASBH has played a significant role in shaping the field of bioethics in the United States. Its multidisciplinary approach has helped to broaden the scope of bioethics, and its certification program has helped to establish standards of practice in the field.
