The ASA was originally established as the Long Island Society of Anesthetists in 1905. In 1911, it was renamed the New York Society of Anesthetists, and in 1936, it became the American Society of Anesthetists. The organization adopted its current name, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, in 1945.
