American Red Cross

The American Red Cross (also known as ARC) is a humanitarian organization that provides emergency assistance, disaster relief, and disaster management education in the United States. It is the designated U.S. affiliate of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

History[edit | edit source]

The American Red Cross was established on May 21, 1881, by Clara Barton. Barton led the organization for the next 23 years, during which time the ARC conducted its first domestic and overseas disaster relief efforts, aided the United States military during the Spanish-American War, and campaigned for the ratification of the Geneva Convention protecting the war-injured, which the United States ratified in 1882.

Services[edit | edit source]

The American Red Cross is involved in a wide range of services, including blood donation, health and safety training, support to military families, disaster response, and community services.

Disaster Response[edit | edit source]

The ARC responds to more than 60,000 disasters annually, ranging from home fires that affect a single family to hurricanes that affect tens of thousands. The ARC provides shelter, food, health, and mental health services to help families and entire communities get back on their feet.

Blood Donation[edit | edit source]

The ARC is the largest single supplier of blood and blood products in the U.S. Each year, nearly four million people donate blood through the Red Cross.

Governance[edit | edit source]

The American Red Cross is governed by a Board of Governors with members appointed by the President of the United States. The ARC is a non-profit organization and relies on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.

Criticism and Controversy[edit | edit source]

The American Red Cross has faced criticism and controversy over its handling of some disasters, its blood collection methods, and its use of funds. Despite these controversies, the ARC remains a major force in disaster response and recovery in the U.S.
