Amos Nourse

Amos Nourse (December 17, 1794 – April 7, 1877) was an American physician and politician who served as a United States Senator from Maine. He was a member of the Republican Party.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Amos Nourse was born in Bolton, Massachusetts. He pursued classical studies and graduated from Harvard University in 1812. He then studied medicine and began practicing as a physician.

Medical Career[edit | edit source]

Nourse had a distinguished career in medicine. He served as a professor of obstetrics and diseases of women and children at the Bowdoin College Medical School in Brunswick, Maine. His contributions to the field of medicine were significant, particularly in the areas of obstetrics and gynecology.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Nourse entered politics later in life. He was appointed as a United States Senator from Maine to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Hannibal Hamlin. He served from January 16, 1857, to March 3, 1857. During his brief tenure, he was involved in various legislative activities, although his time in the Senate was short.

Later Life and Death[edit | edit source]

After his term in the Senate, Nourse returned to his medical practice. He continued to be active in the medical community until his death in Bath, Maine, on April 7, 1877. He was interred in Maple Grove Cemetery.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Amos Nourse is remembered for his contributions to both medicine and politics. His work as a physician and educator had a lasting impact on the medical community in Maine.
