Amrut (whisky)
Amrut is a brand of Indian whisky that is produced by Amrut Distilleries. It is the first single malt whisky to be made in India, and has gained international acclaim for its quality and distinct flavor profile.
History[edit | edit source]
Amrut Distilleries was founded in 1948 by Radhakrishna N. Jagdale. The company initially produced a variety of spirits, including rum and brandy. However, in the early 1980s, Jagdale's son, Neelakanta Rao Jagdale, decided to focus on producing a high-quality single malt whisky that could compete with the best in the world. The result was Amrut, which was first launched in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2004.
Production[edit | edit source]
Amrut whisky is made from barley that is sourced from the foothills of the Himalayas. The barley is malted and then mashed to create a liquid known as wort. The wort is fermented and then distilled in copper pot stills. The distilled spirit is aged in oak barrels for a period of time before being bottled.
The unique climate of India, with its high temperatures and rapid evaporation, results in a whisky that matures much faster than those produced in cooler climates. This gives Amrut its distinctive flavor and character.
Reception[edit | edit source]
Amrut has been well received by critics and consumers alike. It has won numerous awards at international spirits competitions, and has been rated highly by whisky experts. In 2010, whisky connoisseur Jim Murray named Amrut Fusion, a whisky made from a mix of Indian and Scottish barley, as the third best whisky in the world in his Whisky Bible.
Varieties[edit | edit source]
There are several varieties of Amrut whisky available, including Amrut Single Malt, Amrut Fusion, Amrut Peated Malt, and Amrut Cask Strength. Each variety has its own unique flavor profile, but all are characterized by their smoothness and complexity.
