Androgenic hormone

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Androgenic hormone or androgens are a group of hormones that play a key role in male traits and reproductive activity. They are primarily produced in the male testes and female ovaries, but small amounts are also produced by the adrenal glands.

Types of Androgenic Hormones[edit | edit source]

The primary androgens are testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and androstenedione. They are responsible for the development of male sex organs and secondary sex characteristics.

Testosterone[edit | edit source]

Testosterone is the most well-known androgen. It is responsible for the development of the male reproductive system, including the testes and prostate. It also promotes secondary sexual characteristics such as increased muscle and bone mass, and the growth of body hair.

Dihydrotestosterone[edit | edit source]

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a byproduct of testosterone. It is more potent than testosterone and is responsible for many of the same functions. However, DHT plays a greater role in certain areas like the skin, hair follicles, and prostate.

Androstenedione[edit | edit source]

Androstenedione is a less potent androgen and is a precursor to both testosterone and estrogen. It is produced in the adrenal glands and the gonads.

Functions of Androgenic Hormones[edit | edit source]

Androgenic hormones have several functions in both males and females. In males, they are primarily responsible for the development of male sex characteristics. In females, they are involved in ovarian function, bone strength, and behavior.

Health Implications[edit | edit source]

Abnormal levels of androgenic hormones can lead to a variety of health problems. High levels can cause conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in women and prostate cancer in men. Low levels can lead to conditions such as hypogonadism and low sexual desire.
