Angelo Dubini (1813–1902) was an Italian physician and pathologist known for his discovery of the hookworm parasite, Ancylostoma duodenale. His work significantly advanced the understanding of parasitic infections and their impact on human health.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Angelo Dubini was born in Milan, Italy, in 1813. He pursued his medical studies at the University of Pavia, where he developed an interest in pathology and parasitology.

Career[edit | edit source]

After completing his education, Dubini worked at the Ospedale Maggiore in Milan, one of the largest hospitals in Europe at the time. It was here that he made his groundbreaking discovery of the hookworm parasite in 1838. Dubini identified the parasite in the small intestine of a deceased patient, marking the first recorded instance of Ancylostoma duodenale in medical literature.

Discovery of Hookworm[edit | edit source]

Dubini's discovery of the hookworm was a significant milestone in the field of parasitology. The hookworm is a parasitic nematode that infects the small intestine of humans, causing a condition known as hookworm infection. This condition can lead to severe anemia and other health complications, particularly in impoverished regions with poor sanitation.

Dubini's work laid the foundation for further research into the life cycle, transmission, and treatment of hookworm infections. His findings were crucial in understanding the public health implications of parasitic diseases and contributed to the development of strategies to combat them.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Angelo Dubini's contributions to medicine, particularly in the field of parasitology, have had a lasting impact. His discovery of the hookworm parasite has been instrumental in improving the diagnosis and treatment of parasitic infections. Dubini's work continues to be recognized and respected in the medical community.
